Recipe: Smoked Salmon Everything Bagel

The Everything Bagel, originating in New York, blends sesame seeds, poppy seeds, garlic, onion, and salt, offering a flavourful and versatile delight. Born from the city's diverse food scene, this iconic bagel has become a global favourite.

Bursting with vibrant flavours and hues, this recipe is a celebration for bagel enthusiasts. The harmonious blend of creamy textures, smoked salmon's richness, zesty pickled onions, and the brightness of lemon zest create a delicious symphony that encapsulates the essence of summer.


  • 4 Everything Bagels
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese
  • 230 grams smoked salmon
  • Homemade pickled red onions (recipe below)
  • Fresh dill
  • Fresh chives, chopped
  • Lemon zest (from 1 lemon)
  • Capers, drained
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For Homemade Pickled Red Onions:

  • 1 large red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon whole black peppercorns


Make Pickled Red Onions (prepare ahead):

  1. In a saucepan, combine white vinegar, water, sugar, salt, and black peppercorns.
  2. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring until sugar and salt dissolve.
  3. Place the thinly sliced red onions in a clean glass jar.
  4. Pour the hot pickling liquid over the onions, ensuring they are fully submerged.
  5. Allow it to cool to room temperature before sealing the jar and refrigerating. Let it pickle for at least a few hours or overnight.

Make Bagels:

  1. Preheat your oven to (175°C).
  2. Slice each everything bagel in half.
  3. Place the bagel halves on a baking sheet and toast them in the preheated oven until golden brown.
  4. Spread a generous layer of cream cheese on each toasted bagel half.
  5. Top with slices of smoked salmon.
  6. Add a handful of homemade pickled red onions on each bagel.
  7. Sprinkle capers over the pickled onions.
  8. Sprinkle fresh dill and chives over the pickled onions.
  9. Grate lemon zest over the bagels for a burst of citrus flavor.
  10. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  11. Serve with slices of lemon on the side for an extra zing.
